Why I Love Photographing a Rosecliff Mansion Wedding

One of the things I appreciate most about weddings at Rosecliff Mansion is that every space feels connected. It’s easy to move between portraits, family photos, the ceremony, and reception without feeling rushed.

Also, the variety of photo opportunities is incredible. While there, you have elegant architecture, lush gardens, sweeping ocean views, and refined interior spaces all close by. The mansion’s famous heart-shaped staircase is one of the most iconic portrait locations in Newport.

What Makes Rosecliff Mansion So Special

Completed in 1902, Rosecliff Mansion was inspired by the Grand Trianon at Versailles and quickly became one of Newport’s premier gathering places during the Gilded Age. It was created as a showcase for extravagant entertaining, and the mansion hosted lavish parties attended by some of the country’s most prominent families. 

Today, that same sense of grandeur remains while offering couples an exclusive wedding experience. Only one event is hosted each evening, which allows each celebration to receive the attention and care it deserves.

The mansion has also become a favorite filming location over the years. It has appeared in productions like The Great Gatsby, 27 Dresses, True Lies, and Amistad. It’s easy to understand why. Every room feels elegant without being overly ornate, allowing the architecture, natural light, and oceanfront setting to take center stage.

Ceremony & Reception Spaces

One of Rosecliff Mansion’s greatest strengths is its flexibility. Couples can host both their ceremony and reception on-site, allowing guests to fully enjoy the property without needing to travel between locations.

Outdoors

The oceanfront lawn provides a beautiful setting for an outdoor ceremony. Between the Atlantic views and the elegant architecture of the mansion, it’s easy to see why so many couples choose to exchange vows here. It also makes for a fabulous cocktail hour space.

The Salon

The Salon offers a beautiful indoor option for ceremonies, accommodating up to 140 guests. It can also be paired with the Ballroom during the reception, providing additional seating for up to 60 guests or creating extra flexibility for your celebration’s flow.

The Ballroom

The Ballroom is one of Rosecliff’s signature spaces. As the largest private ballroom in Newport, it accommodates dinner and dancing for 160 guests beneath sparkling crystal chandeliers and a ceiling painted to resemble drifting clouds. It’s an elegant setting that beautifully reflects the mansion’s Gilded Age history while creating a memorable experience for your guests.

The Dining Room

The Dining Room offers additional flexibility throughout the evening. Many couples use the space for a cake display, coffee and dessert service, or other thoughtful touches that allow guests to continue exploring the mansion while celebrating.

My Favorite Photo Locations at Rosecliff & Beyond

The Rosecliff grounds offer a beautiful mix of classic architecture, coastal scenery, and elegant garden spaces. Some of my favorite portrait locations include the iconic heart-shaped staircase, the mansion’s exterior, the oceanfront lawn, and the surrounding pathways and gardens.

While Rosecliff Mansion offers countless portrait opportunities on its own, one of the unique advantages of getting married in Newport is the abundance of historic landmarks located just minutes away.

Marble House

For Mary and Kent, we ventured to Marble House for additional portraits. Originally built by William K. Vanderbilt as a birthday gift for his wife Alva, Marble House helped define Newport’s transformation into the grand summer destination it became during the Gilded Age. I love the dramatic marble architecture here.

The Elms

For Hillary and Sebastian, we explored The Elms, an estate modeled after an 18th-century French château. I love the formal gardens, fountains, terraces, and elegant pathways here.

For couples who want even more variety, several other Newport Mansions offer incredible portrait opportunities, too. If you’re considering portraits at The Marble House, The Elms, or another Newport mansion, keep in mind that a photography permit is required. It’s a simple detail to plan for ahead of time but it’s well worth it.

One thing to consider when planning your wedding day is where you’ll get ready before arriving at the mansion. Many couples choose to spend the morning at one of Newport’s charming inns, nearby hotels, or private vacation rentals before heading to the Rosecliff Mansion. This makes for a relaxed start to the day and beautiful getting-ready photographs.
