There’s something so nostalgic and meaningful about photographing your own family—especially when it’s a cousin you’ve known since her birth. As a Detroit engagement photographer, it was a joy and an honor to photograph Caroline and Nick’s fall engagement session on Belle Isle. I’ve known Caroline forever, and I’ve loved watching her and Nick’s relationship grow into something strong, fun, and full of love. When they got engaged in Greece last summer, I knew this session would be special.
We scheduled their session exactly one year before their wedding day. Early November in Michigan is always a toss-up weather-wise, and this particular day was windy and chilly (shock, not)—but also golden, crisp, and beautiful. Caroline and Nick picked Belle Isle for its mix of natural beauty and city views. It was the perfect setting for their playful personalities and casual vibe.

Because they’re relaxed, down-to-earth people, they wore sweaters and jeans—cozy, timeless, and true to them. We explored the western tip of Belle Isle, wandered near the iconic fountain, and found a gorgeous little red bridge tucked among the trees. Even though the Belle Isle Casino was under renovation and off-limits, the island gave us plenty of stunning photo backdrops.

After Belle Isle, we did a quick outfit change and headed into downtown Detroit to chase the last light of the day. Caroline and Nick had scoped out a nearby parking garage with skyline views and a tucked-away alley full of graffiti and string lights. That mix of gritty and romance matched their energy perfectly. It was an ideal way to wrap up their Detroit engagement session—intimate, bold, and real.

Nick has been part of our family for years now. He and Caroline first met at a bar while at Michigan State University, and since then, he’s joined in on family trips and even attended our Baker family reunions. Photographing them was easy. They teased each other, laughed freely, and kept things light even when the wind picked up. That playfulness is something I can’t wait to photograph again on their wedding day.

As a Detroit engagement photographer, I love sessions that feel like an extension of a couple’s real life. Caroline and Nick’s shoot was exactly that: a celebration of their relationship, their city, and the season of life they’re in right now. And personally? I’m just so excited to have the dual honor of being their photographer and bridesmaid next November!
If you’re recently engaged and planning a Detroit wedding—or just love the idea of photos that blend personality, natural connection, and stunning cityscapes—I’d love to connect. Let’s make something beautiful together.
