They turned their engagement session into a full date night, starting with architecture and fashion at Ochre Court, stopping for oysters and Champagne at The Black Pearl, and ending the evening sailing through Newport Harbor as the sun went down.

As a Newport engagement photographer, this is exactly the kind of session I love. You get beautiful photographs, of course, but you also get to spend an afternoon and evening doing things you actually enjoy together. For couples who love historic architecture, getting dressed up, trying a great restaurant, and making an occasion out of an ordinary day, Newport is pretty hard to beat.

Starting at Ochre Court

We started Tori and Aidan’s session at Ochre Court at Salve Regina University. The historic building made for a lovely backdrop. I love the dramatic architecture there, and we had plenty of space to move around. Newport is home to so many historic buildings and interesting spaces that you really can’t go wrong in choosing your starting point!

Oysters and Champagne at The Black Pearl

Next, we headed to The Black Pearl for a little break in the middle of the session. Tori and Aidan sat on the patio, ordered oysters and Champagne, and got to soak in the moment for a bit.

I love including something like this in an engagement session because it gives you photographs that feel like you and show off what you enjoy doing together. You can build a session around things you would already want to do on a Saturday night and let the photographs happen along the way.

Sunset Sailing in Newport Harbor

We ended the evening on a chartered sailboat in Newport Harbor, which turned out to be the perfect way to finish the session. The day had been a little overcast, but as we sailed through the harbor, the clouds opened up and the sunset came through. It was gorgeous! The water, the boats, and the Newport coastline gave us an entirely different setting from where we’d started earlier that afternoon.

Why Newport Is Perfect for an Engagement Session

One of the reasons I love photographing engagement sessions in Newport is that you don’t have to choose between a beautiful backdrop and a fun experience. You can have both! You might start with historic architecture, grab a drink or dinner somewhere along the waterfront, and finish with a walk through town or a sunset sail. If you love getting dressed up, there are plenty of opportunities to make your outfits part of the experience, too.

Newport also works particularly well for couples who appreciate historic homes and estates. The architecture gives your photographs a sense of place and there are plenty of options for couples who want their session to feel more editorial.

For Tori and Aidan, Newport was the perfect setting for the kind of engagement session they wanted. It felt like a date night, an adventure, and a chance to celebrate this season of their relationship all at once.

Tori and Aidan’s engagement session took place in Newport, but their wedding brought them to Philadelphia for a celebration at Elkins Estate. Elkins Estate has that same kind of historic architecture and old-world feeling that made Ochre Court such a good fit for their engagement photos. Elkins Estate feels like a natural extension of the things Tori and Aidan were drawn to during their session: beautiful spaces, fashion, and an experience that feels a little different from the ordinary.
