A Vizcaya Museum and Gardens wedding feels a little like stepping into another world without leaving Miami. With its Mediterranean-style architecture, formal European gardens, and views of Biscayne Bay, Vizcaya is one of those places that feels completely different from the rest of the city.

It’s also a fantastic option for couples who love the look of European estates but want to get married in Miami. Whether you’re planning a destination wedding or you’re local to South Florida, Vizcaya offers an incredible setting for weddings, engagements, and even proposals.

Why I Love Photographing a Vizcaya Museum & Gardens Wedding

There are very few places in Miami where you can get this much variety in one location. The architecture at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens gives you the European estate feel, while the gardens and tropical landscape make it unmistakably South Florida.

For portraits, that’s a pretty great combination. The gardens are laid out as a series of outdoor “rooms,” with formal parterres, fountains, pathways, and different garden spaces to explore. Beyond the manicured areas, Vizcaya also preserved parts of the native forest, so there are plenty of ways to change up the look throughout a session.

The shade is another major bonus, especially if you’re photographing here during the warmer months. During my visit in early April, we were outside for hours and it was hot. Thankfully, there were plenty of shaded areas to give us a break from the sun and create softer light. When we wanted something more dramatic, we could step back into the sun and play with the contrast.

What Makes Vizcaya So Special

Vizcaya was built between 1914 and 1922 as the winter estate of James Deering, and the Main House was designed with strong Mediterranean and Italian influences. Today, it’s a National Historic Landmark and one of Miami’s most recognizable historic properties.

The Main House overlooks Biscayne Bay, while the formal gardens were inspired by Italian and French garden design. The property feels much more like an historic European estate than somewhere you’d expect to find in the middle of Miami.

The nearby bay gives the property a completely different feel from many European-inspired venues. You can have formal architecture and manicured gardens in one direction and expansive views of Biscayne Bay in the other. For couples who want a wedding gallery with a lot of variety, that’s a pretty hard combination to beat.

Vizcaya Museum & Gardens Wedding Ceremony & Reception Spaces

One of the things I like about Vizcaya is that couples aren’t limited to a single ceremony or reception setup. Depending on the size and format of your event, there are several areas available throughout the property.

The Gardens

Garden ceremonies are a beautiful option for smaller celebrations. Vizcaya allows daytime garden ceremonies for up to 50 guests, with ceremonies taking place between 9:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. There is no access to the Main House for these daytime ceremonies, so this option is best suited to couples who want to focus on the gardens and outdoor experience.

The Courtyard

The Main House Courtyard is available for ceremonies and smaller receptions. It’s one of the spaces that really captures the European estate feeling of Vizcaya, with the architecture surrounding you on all sides.

The Terraces

For larger celebrations, the East Terrace overlooks Biscayne Bay and the historic gardens. It can accommodate up to 300 seated guests, making it the primary option for larger receptions.

This is where tented weddings are especially incredible. A clear tent on the East Terrace lets you dine beneath the Miami sky while still having the architecture, gardens, and bay surrounding you.

Favorite Photo Locations at Vizcaya

If you’re planning a wedding or engagement photo session at Vizcaya, here are some of my favorite photo locations.

The Main House

The Main House has so many architectural details that you could spend an entire portrait session here and still have more to photograph. The exterior, terraces, loggias, arches, and courtyard all give you different options.

For couples who want photographs inside the historic rooms, though, this is an important venue to understand. Vizcaya is very protective of the Main House and has specific rules around photography. Personal portrait photography requires a permit, and the Premium Indoor Photography permit provides guided access to select areas of the Main House during a limited morning window before the museum opens to the public. If indoor photographs are important to you, it is definitely something to plan well in advance rather than assuming you’ll be able to walk inside whenever you’d like.

The Formal Gardens

The gardens are probably my favorite part of the property for portraits. There are formal hedges, fountains, sculptures, pathways, and garden “rooms,” each with a slightly different look.

You can keep things very architectural and polished or move into the greenery for something softer. And because the gardens are so expansive, it’s easy to find pockets of shade when needed.

Biscayne Bay & The Terraces

The views toward Biscayne Bay give you a completely different backdrop from the gardens. This is especially beautiful later in the day when the light starts to change and the water becomes part of the scene. For an engagement session or proposal, I’d absolutely want to build in time to explore several areas rather than staying in one spot.

What to Know Before Planning a Vizcaya Museum & Gardens Wedding

Vizcaya is a historic museum, not a traditional wedding venue, and that distinction matters when you’re planning here. The property is open to the public during the day, so evening events have specific setup windows. Current rental information lists evening events from 6:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., with additional fees for extended hours. The property can accommodate up to 300 guests, and events with more than 90 guests require tenting.

You’ll also need to work with Vizcaya’s approved vendors. The venue provides the site but does not handle catering, rentals, or décor, so your planner and vendor team will be an important part of making the day run smoothly.

And one other thing couples should know: there isn’t a getting-ready suite at Vizcaya. The current facility rental terms list the restrooms as the only dressing facilities available to rental clients. I’d recommend getting ready somewhere nearby and arriving at Vizcaya once you’re ready for the rest of the day. Fortunately, Miami has plenty of beautiful hotels and private spaces that can work well for getting-ready photographs.

How many guests can you have at a Vizcaya wedding?

Vizcaya can accommodate up to 300 guests. Smaller receptions of up to 100 seated guests can take place in the Main House Courtyard, while larger celebrations can take place on the East Terrace overlooking Biscayne Bay and the gardens.

Where can you have your wedding ceremony at Vizcaya?

Ceremonies can take place in the gardens or the Main House Courtyard, depending on your event and guest count. The gardens are a great option for couples who want an outdoor ceremony surrounded by Vizcaya’s landscaping, while the Courtyard brings more of the estate’s architecture into the experience.

Can you have a tented wedding reception at Vizcaya?

Yes! Larger receptions take place on the East Terrace, and tenting is required for events with more than 90 guests. I think this could be such a fun option for couples who want an alfresco reception with views of Biscayne Bay, while still having the structure and coverage of a tent.

Does Vizcaya have a getting-ready suite?

No, Vizcaya doesn’t have a traditional getting-ready suite. Since the museum is open to the public during the day, I recommend getting ready at a nearby hotel or private rental before heading to the venue.

Can you have a cocktail hour outside?

Yes. Cocktail hour can take place in the Courtyard, gardens, or terraces overlooking Biscayne Bay. This gives you the opportunity to move guests through different areas of the property throughout the evening.

Does Vizcaya provide wedding vendors?

Vizcaya provides the venue but doesn’t handle catering, rentals, or décor. Couples must work with vendors from Vizcaya’s Approved Vendor List, so it’s worth discussing your vendor options with your planner early in the planning process.

Can you take wedding portraits inside Vizcaya?

Access to the Main House is limited, and couples shouldn’t assume that indoor portraits will be available throughout their wedding day. Vizcaya has specific photography rules to protect the historic property. The good news is that the gardens, terraces, Courtyard, and exterior of the Main House provide plenty of options for wedding portraits.

What time can you get married at Vizcaya?

Evening wedding rentals are generally available from 6:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m., with the option to extend the event for an additional fee. Because Vizcaya is open to the public during the day, vendor setup also has specific time restrictions that your planner will need to work into the timeline.

Vizcaya Engagement & Portrait Session FAQ

Do you need a photography permit for engagement photos at Vizcaya?

Yes. A photography permit is required for engagement and portrait sessions. Standard portrait permits provide access to the gardens while the museum is open to the public, and reservations must be made in advance.

Can you take engagement photos inside the Main House?

Not with a standard portrait permit. Vizcaya offers a Premium Indoor + Garden Photography permit that provides limited access to select areas of the Main House before the museum opens. This option is currently temporarily unavailable, so check Vizcaya’s website for the latest information before planning your session.

Is there a way to photograph the gardens before they open?

Yes. The Premium Early Access Photography permit allows photographers and their clients to access the gardens from 8:00 to 9:30 a.m., before the museum opens to the public. This can be a great option if you want a quieter experience and fewer visitors in the background.

Can you propose at Vizcaya?

Yes! Vizcaya can be a beautiful setting for a proposal, especially if you love historic architecture and gardens. Photography permits are limited each day, so be sure to reserve your photographer and permit in advance rather than arriving without a reservation.
