Lauren Baker is a fine art destination wedding photographer serving New England, the Midwest, and destinations everywhere.
A Montage Palmetto Bluff wedding brings together the charm of the South with a feeling that reminds me so much of New England. Nestled along South Carolina’s May River, this Lowcountry resort combines centuries-old live oaks, charming cottages, waterfront views, and exceptional hospitality to create the perfect Lowcountry venue.
As a destination wedding photographer, I love venues that create an experience from the moment guests arrive. Montage Palmetto Bluff does exactly that. With luxurious accommodations, countless ceremony and reception locations, and miles of scenic pathways to explore, couples and their guests can really slow down and spend quality time together.
Jackie and Zach came to Bluffton from New Hampshire knowing they wanted more than a beautiful venue. They wanted a wedding weekend that gave them meaningful time with their families and closest friends. From the family-only rehearsal dinner to the speakeasy-inspired welcome party, every part of the celebration reflected that.

One of the main reasons I love photographing weddings at Montage Palmetto Bluff is the variety throughout the property. There are charming cottages, waterfront paths, towering live oaks draped in Spanish moss, quiet trails, and elegant architecture. They all create beautiful opportunities for portraits without ever feeling repetitive.
The venue is also extremely flexible. After heavy rain the day before and throughout the morning, Jackie and Zach moved their cocktail hour, which was originally planned to take place outdoors, indoors, and we embraced the weather throughout the day. The venue’s staff was supportive the entire time.

Set within a 20,000-acre community between Hilton Head Island and Savannah, Montage Palmetto Bluff feels less like a traditional resort and more like a charming Southern village.
Guests can spend the weekend exploring miles of walking trails, enjoying incredible dining experiences, relaxing at the spa, or simply sitting on a porch overlooking the May River. For couples planning a destination wedding, that means your wedding becomes an opportunity for your favorite people to gather, reconnect, and celebrate together in a place that’s luxurious and welcoming.
The venue also offers an incredible variety of gathering areas and event spaces, making it easy to create a wedding that feels unique. Whether you’re envisioning an intimate chapel ceremony, a waterfront cocktail hour, or a tented reception beneath centuries-old live oaks, there are countless ways to personalize your celebration.

Overlooking the May River, the May River Chapel is one of the most romantic ceremony spaces on the property. Jackie and Zach exchanged vows here surrounded by their closest family and friends. It felt so intimate and timeless.

Following the ceremony, guests gathered at the River House for an elegant indoor reception in the Oak Ballroom. Large windows, beautiful architectural details, and views of the river create a space that feels bright, welcoming, and refined.

A tented wedding reception on the Village Green would be absolutely gorgeous. Surrounded by historic ruins, sweeping lawns, and towering live oaks, you can imagine an elegant sailcloth tent glowing beneath café lights as guests celebrate late into the evening. It’s one of the most unique reception settings in the Lowcountry.
Originally, Jackie and Zach planned to host cocktail hour on the May River Lawn before the weather had other plans. With river views and centuries-old oak trees, it’s easy to see why it’s such a popular gathering space, especially during golden hour.

One of the things I love most about Montage Palmetto Bluff is how much variety couples can experience without ever leaving the property. The charming cottages create a beautiful setting for getting-ready photographs, while the pathways through Wilson Village feel quiet and romantic. The May River provides a stunning backdrop throughout the day, and the towering oak trees draped in Spanish moss give every portrait a sense of place that’s unmistakably Southern.
As golden hour rolls around, the waterfront becomes especially beautiful. Jackie and Zach were rewarded with one of those unforgettable sunsets that only seem to happen after a rainy day. It was complete with a rainbow stretching across the sky!

For couples traveling from the Northeast, Montage Palmetto Bluff offers something familiar and completely new at the same time. There’s a timeless elegance here that reminds me of some of New England’s most beloved coastal destinations, but it’s paired with the warmth, hospitality, and slower pace that make the South so inviting.
It’s especially well suited for couples who value quality time with their guests. With cottages, restaurants, outdoor activities, and plenty of space to gather throughout the weekend, your wedding naturally becomes more than a single event.

If you’re planning a Montage Palmetto Bluff wedding and are searching for a photographer who values genuine connection, thoughtful guidance, and timeless imagery, I’d love to hear more about what you’re envisioning.
Whether you’re dreaming of an intimate chapel ceremony, an elegant ballroom reception, or a tented celebration beneath the live oaks, Montage Palmetto Bluff is one of those rare venues that feels both effortlessly beautiful and deeply personal. I’d be honored to help document your wedding weekend in a way that feels true to you and the people you love most.
